Meet the Staff

Katie Phelan, LVT Director

Katie has been a Licensed Veterinary Technician since 2002 when she graduated from Macomb Community College. She worked for many years for her Step-Father, Dr. Gary Vyncke, DVM until his retirement. She took over directorship of the Blue Water Area Humane Society in the summer of 2013. She lives with her husband, Chris who also helps out at the shelter, four dogs; Izzi and Jinx the poodle yorkie mixes, Penny, the blind super poodle who was adopted from the shelter when Katie was a volunteer, and Percy Sparkles, the three legged Chihuahua mix as well as two cats; Egg Roll and Stir Fry, and rats named Cleo  and Ellie. You’ll find Katie just about anywhere in the shelter helping with day to day chores or giving some extra attention to the dogs that come in.











Alison Toles, Manager

Alison started at the shelter in June of 2015 after completing her Bachelors Degree in Health Services Administration. She shares her home with her husband, two of her children, three dogs; Harley, Winston and Gidget; three cats; Ebby, Cloud and Cali and 2 rats. Alison can do just about everything that needs to be done at the shelter and you can find her running the show when Katie needs to be at events.















 Nancy Falk

Nancy started as a volunteer 25 years ago. She is employed by the Port Huron Area School District working with special needs children and been a part time employee at the shelter for four years working on Saturdays and during the summer. Nancy lives on a small farm with her husband Matt and three dogs, four cats, a flock of ducks and chickens and a goat named Earl.















Bonnie Carpenter

Bonnie Carpenter has been with the Blue Water Area Humane Society for over 30 years. She is married to Dennis and has four dogs; two pugs Lavern and Pudding, Ivan a golden retriever mix, Wyatt, a cattle dog who holds championships in obedience and rally, and their cat Pettie. You can find Bonnie most days taking care of the kittens in the nursery and working with the dogs. With her knowledge of training, she helps work with the shelter dogs to teach them basic obedience.  


Debra Rumsey

Debra Rumsey has been working for Blue Water Area Humane Society for over 12 years. She shares her home with a pack of six little dogs and three cats. Debra is in charge of our largest adoptable cat zone and also assists at the front desk. Due to her extensive knowledge of the personalities of the cats and kittens she cares for, Debra helps many owners find the right companion for their home.  







 

Kathy Elzey

Kathy started as a volunteer in 2007, then became a part time employee. She recently started full time after retiring from St. Joseph Mercy Hospital. She cares for the new arrivals and dogs and is also our “weekend warrior” coming in when the shelter is closed to make sure everyone gets the attention they need. Kathy shares her home with four dogs, five rabbits, one cat, one guinea pig and a flock of beautiful birds.
